Flotsam & Jetsam

“A collection of photos I shot in my home city Shanghai, my photobook ‘Flotsam & Jetsam’ captures this metropolis in the past decade. During this time, I shot loads of images in the streets of Shanghai as well as in my home and friends’ places. They were not planned in origin to document ‘the disappearing old Shanghai’. These photos have been shot with left-over films. Each time I went travelling, I would bring back half a roll of un-shot negative in my camera. Desiring to finish off these frames, I’d take the camera to the streets, lanes and forgotten corners of Shanghai and shoot anything that catches my eye. The resulting photos are not the standard vision of Shanghai the metropolis, nor are they the nostalgic view of the old Shanghai. In a sense, these images are trivial and unnecessary, flotsam and jetsam randomly picked up by myself. Throughout the years, my vision has been changing, sometimes romantic and sometimes cynical. But always I shoot with love for my physical hometown.”
